Addition- Completing a Newburyport Victorian

Newburyport, Massachusetts

Project: Design a mudroom and outdoor shed to match the existing house, follow up with designs for a eating/family room space, a second floor laundry and exercise room, and third floor 3/4 bathroom, and maintain a schedule with little room for error.

Often times an addition is judged by the fact that the onlooker cannot tell where the main house ends and the addition starts. This Newburyport Victorian home is one such project.

It is difficult to tell where the main house ends and the new addition starts with this Victorian.

It is difficult to tell where the main house ends and the new addition starts with this Victorian.

The owner started with the his initial wish list of a mudroom and an outdoor shed to match the existing house. Other needs that further modernized this Victorian house followed, such as an additional eating/family room space, a second floor laundry and exercise room, and a third floor 3/4 bathroom

Just as important to these functional needs, however, was a desire here to “finish” the home – replacing a prior rear addition with something that would look as if it was part of the original home to begin with.

The floor-by-floor list of additions and renovations to this house were:

  • 1st Floor: A mudroom, a larger eating/sitting area, a computer alcove, and a new deck. A shed was also added for storage of bikes, gardening equipment, etc.
  • 2nd Floor; A laundry room/exercise room
  • 3rd Floor: A New 3/4 bathroom and finished hallway/storage space
